Conversations with the Sea

By the West Coast of Finland, in the Bothnian Sea (a norther part of Baltic Sea), is a group of low and small reefs, four nautical miles from the mainland, called Rayhat Reef. (In Finnish, the origin of the word Räyhät comes from the roar of the sea.)

Though there’s no archipelago near these reefs, they are in shallow waters and the shorelines
are ground, stony and very hard to strand if there’s even a smallest swell. Until the 80’s, there was a lot of small fisherman’s huts on the reefs, but when the faster outboard motor got common, the huts was abandoned.

Now these small reefs are an Eldorado for sea birds of this latitude as there’s practically no human intrusion. Most common birds here are Herring Gull, Common Gull and Great Black-backed Gull, Common Eider, Goosander, and both Arctic and Common Terns.

I have a lot of recordings over the years from these reefs, but I wanted one with the sea accompanying the birds. In 10 Juni this summer, after days of harder winds, I went on shore on the biggest reef, and left the microphones there for some hours.

You will here how nice and maybe also fancy, the Gulls, mostly Herring Gull, are sounding when there’s no disturbing or distracting elements along. As I hear it, they have a conversation with the sea as well as with each others.

Recording made with spaced omnis (20 cm, 110 degrees) MKH8020, SD702 recorder and in 24/48 waw. The mics are 20 meters from the shoreline on a tripod ca. 1,6 m high. Duration 15.15
